How To Become A Model Or Improve Your Modelling Career

Becoming a model can seem to be a difficult process, but when you know the steps actual models have taken, you can see how this goal is more possible than you might realize.  With time, the right networking, and some hard work, an attractive person can become a model.

Modeling is a profession many hope to get into, but the trick is knowing where to start.  With shows like Project Runway and other model contests, it can seem as though getting on TV is the only way to make sure you get seen by the best modelling agencies.  But these shows are only one way to get your looks assessed by people who can secure you modeling contracts.

Have You Got What It Takes To Become A Model?

Before you can begin your hunt to become a model, you might want to start by taking a good long look at yourself.  You need to think about whether you are truly model material.  If you’ve heard from friends, loved ones, and strangers that you are attractive enough to model, chances are good that you have the looks.

But you need to be healthy too.  You need to have nice teeth, a firm figure, and a sense of self-confidence.  Modelling isn’t always an easy business, so you need to be someone who can smile, no matter what is happening around you.  Often, this is the most important quality a model can have, outside of their looks.  If you can’t stay composed in your job, chances are good no one’s going to want to work with you.  If you can charm people with your personality as much as you can with your looks, you’re well on your way to being a model.

Different Types Of Modelling Careers And Modeling Jobs

In the modelling world, there a number of different modeling categories in which you might fit.  When you want to be a model, you want to think about the sort of model you can be so that you can target your job search in that direction.  Some of the modeling types include:

  • Catwalk or Runway Model - The tall and graceful models that walk on catwalks are a special breed.  They need to be able to move gracefully and provide a lovely place for the clothes to be modeled to an audience.
  • Catalogue Model - Some models will pose for pictures to be placed in catalogues, either in print or online.
  • Plus size Model - Larger models with curvaceous figures might want to be plus size models, highlighting their figures.
  • Baby Model – Who siad all babies look the same? They really don’t and there is always a demand for baby models of all looks and sizes.
  • Child Model – Do you have a little star? Potential kid or child models need to have a real outgoing personality.
  • Teen Model - With the era of look conscious teens armed with their own credit cards the demand is huge for teen models.
  • Lingerie Model – Shapes and sizes depend on the company, magazine, Web site, etc you are promoting. There are opportunities for all looks and sizes.
  • Swimsuit or Bikini Model – Similar to the lingerie model but generally models must have a certain look.
  • Fashion Model – Need a good portfolio, be very good in front of the camera with natural movement, have a great smile and hair.
  • Nude or Glamour Model – Nudity comes in different guises. Nude or glamour can be an ambiguous term – i.e. Art Nude, Erotic, Implied Nude, Topless, etc.
  • Sports or Fitness Model - The health and fitness industry is booming. Models are required for all media platforms – but you have to have the body and look.

But these categories can branch off into other types too – magazines, commercials, etc.

What really matters is what sort of look you bring to the camera’s viewfinder.  If you can captivate the audience, then you are someone a modelling agency wants to have in their company.  This may mean that you have a completely unique look or that you have a look that is ‘hot’ at the time – i.e. the waif look of the 1990s.
